Navy to provide additional sargassum vessels and barriers for Quintana Roo coast

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Navy of Mexico says additional sargassum vessels and containment barriers will be made available for Quintana Roo. The announcement was made during President López Obrador’s Thursday morning press conference.

Juan Luis Miraflores Ruiz, the head of the Civil Protection and Contingencies grant of the Operations Section of the General Staff of the Mexican Navy, said more sargassum vessels and containment barriers will be made available to deal with the arrival of seaweed to the Quintana Roo coasts.

He also said they are continuing efforts in the search for alternatives for the comprehensive use of the arriving sargassum.

According to Miraflores Ruiz, in 2019 and 2020, the Navy spent more than 400 million pesos for the construction of the sargassum boats. From 2022 to 2024, the state of Quintana Roo has been responsible for disbursing these resources and delivering spare parts, especially for containment barriers, to the Navy.

Miraflores Ruiz says the resources spent by the Government of the State of Quintana Roo for the acquisition of spare parts, containment barriers, tractors, sweepers and conveyor belts has been just over 406.9 million pesos.

He announced that, aware of the importance of the tourism sector for the country’s economy, the Navy, in coordination with the State Government, will continue to promote the construction of more sargassum vessels, at least one ocean vessel and six coastal sargassum vessels, as well as the acquisition of more containment barriers.
