Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez says the municipality will donate land to enable the expansion of the island’s IMSS hospital. The decision was made in collaboration with the head of the IMSS in Quintana Roo, Javier Michael Naranjo García.
Authorities have agreed to begin the process for the donation of a property owned by the municipality for the expansion of the General Hospital of Subzone with Family Medicine (HGSZ/MF) No. 2 of Cozumel.
According to Chacón Méndez, the expansion will be built on a five-hectare plot of land on Avenida 35 Sur. This expansion will benefit more than 52,000 beneficiaries, which represents nearly 95 percent of the island’s population, he reported.
Dr. Javier Michael Naranjo García, head of the IMSS in Quintana Roo, stressed the importance of this expansion, which will allow quality services to be offered to the entire population, ensuring that health is a priority for the people of Cozumel.
Gerardo Méndez García, the head of the IMSS Construction and Real Estate Planning Department in Quintana Roo, explained that the hospital unit currently has eight family medicine offices and three specialty offices.
With the expansion, the number of family medicine offices will increase to 10 and the number of specialty offices to seven, thus improving the care and services provided.
Thanks to this collaboration, the hospital’s infrastructure will increase from 25 to 40 hospital beds and will have 10 family medicine offices, seven specialty offices, in addition to expanding X-ray and laboratory services.
The total of the new infrastructure will be 4,767 square meters, with 2,228 square meters for remodeling and 2,917 square meters for exterior adaptations.
