More to come: Sudden downpour soaks Cancun-Riviera Maya

Cancun, Q.R. — A sudden but not unexpected downpour left many areas of Cancun flooded Friday. The afternoon rains arrived with an active thunderstorm as predicted.

Several main avenues became a challenge for pedestrians due to the heavy rain. One person in the Villas del Mar III residential area of Cancun was reportedly struck by lightning.

Emergency 9-1-1 received the report Friday afternoon through the city’s C5 Centre. There has not been any status update on that report.

A majority of the state was hit by the angry thunder and lightning system that began early Friday afternoon. Some part of the city were left without power for around 30 minutes.

Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) personnel worked to restore electrical service in regions 92, 94 and 100 where the power outages were reported. Some traffic lights along José López Portillo were also affected.

On Friday, Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) forecast the downpours with the passing of two systems. A total of 15 states will continue to be affected by the passing of tropical waves 11 and 12 over the weekend.

One of those states is Quintana Roo. The SMN continues to forecast as much as 50mms of rain for the region Saturday.

“A low pressure channel interacting with tropical wave number 11 and number 12 as it passes through the Yucatan Peninsula and southeastern Mexico will cause heavy rains (75 to 150 millimeters) in Campeche, Chiapas, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Tabasco and southern Veracruz, as well as very heavy rains (50 to 75 mm) in Quintana Roo and Yucatan,” the weather agency reported Friday.

For Saturday, the SMN says Quintana Roo can expect as much as another 50mms due to the tropical waves.

For Saturday, State Civil Protection has reported “the displacement of tropical wave number 12 over the southwest of the country and the entry of tropical maritime air from the Caribbean Sea towards the Yucatan Peninsula, will maintain partly cloudy to cloudy skies over the state of Quintana Roo during the course of the day, moderate rains with occasional heavy rains accompanied by electrical activity.

“The atmosphere will be very hot to muggy during the day and warm at night and early morning. The wind will remain easterly with gusts of 30 to 50 km/h. There is a new tropical wave over the central portion of the Caribbean Sea, its axis is located north-south from the east of Cuba to the middle portion of Colombia, South America, moving westward at a speed of between 35 and 46 km /h.”
