More than 100 taxi drivers under review for aggressive outbursts against other public transporters

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — More than 100 taxi drivers around the state are being investigated for aggressive behavior. The public transport drivers are undergoing reviews after being involved in some form of aggression against other public transport drivers.

State Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez says there are 114 drivers under review. Of those, 16 are under appeal. At least 35 of the accused taxi drivers were found guilty and had their licenses and / or state concessions revoked.

Torres Gómez says state officials have warned taxi drivers that there will be no impunity for anyone who breaks the law.

“Whatever the situation, whatever the platform, whatever the union, whether it is a concessioned transport or a platform, we will go all the way regarding the law.

“On the administrative side, if the person who has the concession is guilty, there will be termination of the concession. For criminal proceedings, if there is a crime, it is up to the respective authorities to hand down sentencing, but there is no impunity in this matter,” she said.

Cancun and Playa del Carmen taxi drivers have been videoed assaulting Uber drivers, even when they are transporting tourists.

The State Secretary said road operations and vehicle inspections will be reinforced, however, citizens need to report situations, such as the recent passenger report of an intoxicated Cancun bus driver. In that November 29 instance, the bus was pulled over by police and a breathalyzer issued to the driver, which he failed and was subsequently arrested.

Torres Gómez says for citizens who publish situations on social media, those are being followed-up. She says authorities do their best to locate the person who uploaded the video or complaint to facilitate the process for them to file the corresponding complaint and thus be able to move forward.

She says the intention of the government is to put order in public transport and to stop these type of acts that damage the image of the destination and put the safety of passengers at risk.

Taxi drivers around the state continue to attack vehicles they believe are Uber., even when they are not.

“We continue to invite people to make report because there are possibly some cases that we are not being informed about but that we know about through social media users, but we follow up on those published on social networks to find who published, find their source and facilitate the filing of the complaint.

“The intention is for transportation in Quintana Roo to be in order, at peace and in accordance with the laws.” Torres Gómez says while a majority of the cases have been reported in the northern region, inspections and operations will be increased across the state.
