Riviera Maya, Q.R. — State government officials have released a report warning Quintana Roo residents of more rain. Meteorologists say two more tropical waves are forecast to move over the region in coming days.
Governor Mara Lezama says on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, two tropical waves will travel through the Yucatan Peninsula and interact with the monsoon trough, causing more rain and wind.
On Sunday evening, Riviera Maya was hit with intense rains that left ferry terminals temporarily shut. While ports have since been reopened for ferry passengers, there are still restrictions in place for small boats.
Lezama reported that to date, across the state, officials have located 86 sinkholes and 318 potholes. She also reported that classes for both public and private schools have reopened in the south after a week of closures.
Free tow truck services are still available for residents with waterlogged vehicles and the Executive Secretariat continues to support occupants of flooded homes with minor bilge pumps to clean them.

“In view of the presence of rain and strong winds Sunday, the Municipal Government headed by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, is keeping the Storm Operation active to promptly address the flooding and provide assistance to the population that requires it.
“In this operation, the Civil Protection and Fire Department coordinates work with the Environment and Ecology, Public Services and Citizen Security departments, acting in a timely manner so that the impacts are minimal in both areas of the municipality.
“Among the actions carried out through the Storm Operation are the cleaning of grates in streets and avenues, the collection of garbage, pruning of trees and vegetation and the monitoring of vulnerable areas,” the Government of Isla Mujeres posted Sunday.

Government aid is still being provided to affected residents. Approximately 100 Army personnel in 15 trucks continue to assist with the delivery of boxes of basic food items as well as replacement appliances that include fridges, stoves and mattresses.
Lezama reported that 350 National Guard elements and 20 vehicles continue to offer assistance in addition to 225 Navy personnel in 11 vehicles. To date, Mexico’s military have evacuated 397 people from flooded homes.
On Sunday, State Civil Protection reported “in close collaboration with elements of the Conagua Clima, we are responding to reports of flooding after the heavy rains recorded Sunday in the streets of the Island of Holbox.”
Civil Protection are part of the ongoing support team who have helped (to date) pump 81,700 cubic meters of water in Chetumal and 14,832 cubic meters in Holbox. More rain is expected with the passing of two tropical waves.
On Monday morning, State Civil Protection said “the monsoon trough that extends close to the coasts of the southern Mexican Pacific, a low pressure channel over the Yucatan Peninsula and the approach of a tropical wave to the south of the Peninsula, will maintain over the State of Quintana Roo partly cloudy skies during the course of the day with intervals of showers with heavy rains accompanied by electrical activity over the state.
“The environment will be hot and muggy during the day and warm in the early morning and at dawn. The wind will remain from the southeast with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h.”
