Mexico hiring nearly 14,000 medical specialists for public health care systems

Mexico City, Mexico — President Claudia Sheinbaum says Mexico will hire nearly 14,000 medical specialists this year. She described the hiring as historic saying it will strengthen the country’s three public health care systems.

Those include the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) and IMSS Bienestar.

“It’s related to the reform implemented by President López Obrador, which we continued, to increase the number of doctors entering specialist training programs.

“Remember that during the neoliberal period, the number of doctors entering specialist training programs decreased significantly. So this year, we are hiring nearly 14,000 specialists which clearly strengthens the three health systems,” she explained.

Zoé Robledo Aburto, the Director General of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), said the IMSS registered the highest number of specialists hired. They include 10,785 physicians, 5,694 women and 5,091 men, who will be incorporated into the medical system this year.

Of these, 446 will be assigned to High Specialty Medical Units, 8,438 to regional, zone and subzone hospitals, 1,040 to rural hospitals and 861 to family medical units.

Martí Batres Guadarrama, who is the General Director of ISSSTE, reported that for the health of the State’s workers, 1,295 doctors were hired. For the third public medical system, 1,956 medical specialists are being incorporated reported Alejandro Svarch Pérez, the General Director of IMSS Bienestar.

Furthermore, he reported that 160 million units of medication have been delivered through the Health Routes program. Of those, 115 million units were delivered in 2025 and 45 million so far in 2026.

Regarding the supply of cancer medications, he explained that it is monitored in real time and availability fluctuates between 91 and 97 percent in the 56 IMSS Bienestar units that provide cancer care.

Additionally, a white button on telephones installed outside pharmacies has been implemented to report availability interruptions.
