Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Mexican Caribbean barely had a day’s breather before the arrival of more cold air. Cold front 33 that arrived as a mass of polar air Thursday is forecast to move off for the weekend.
Cancun weather is expected to improve with the return of seasonal daytime temperatures for the weekend. However, nighttime temperatures will still remain cool.
Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) says the current cold mass of polar air will start to move away from the peninsula Friday afternoon.
“Cold front number 33 will move rapidly across southeastern Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula,” the SMN reported Friday morning.

“The polar air mass associated with the front will maintain the “Norte” event with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca and Chiapas).
“Winds of between 70 to 90 km/h will be felt in Veracruz and 50 to 70 km/h in Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo,” they said.
“It is expected that during the afternoon, this polar air mass will begin to modify its thermal characteristics, favoring a gradual rise in afternoon temperatures across most of the country.
“However, cold conditions will persist during the morning and night in the higher elevations of the Northern Plateau and the Central Plateau.”

Seasonal temperatures considered normal for this time of year around Cancun and Riviera Maya are expected to return in coming days. Cancun weather should start to see a rebound for Saturday.
Cold front 33 was the second blast of cold air to cover the entire Yucatan Peninsula this week. Cold front 33 arrived as a mass of polar air Thursday. Five days earlier, on Saturday, an enormous mass of Arctic air hit the region.
That mass of cold Arctic air, cold front 32, stuck around for several days before finally moving off. However, it was replaced 24 hours later with polar air from cold front 33.

State Civil Protection says due to the north winds from cold front 33, nighttime and early morning temperatures will remain cold. Low temperatures ranging from 9C (48F) to 11C (51F) are likely for most of the state tonight until the front completely moves off.
