Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A further decrease in overnight temperatures is expected with the arrival of more cold air for Cancun and Riviera Maya. State Civil Protection says thermometers will drop even further for the weekend with the arrival of cold front 32.
The large mass of Arctic air is quickly moving toward the Yucatan Peninsula and once here, will cause a further dip in early morning temperatures.
State Civil Protection (Estatal de Protección Civil) of Quintana Roo reported Thursday on the cool wakeup temperatures recorded around the state due to U.S. winter storm Fern. The agency says those cool temperatures are expected to decrease even further with the arrival of the next cold front.

On Thursday, residents across the state of Quintana Roo woke up to temperatures of between 10C (50F) and 23C (73F). According to State Civil Protection:

Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) reports very strong winds of between 50km/h and 70 km/h are expected for Friday night as the system nears the peninsula.

The SMN says for Friday, north winds of 30 km/h to 40 km/h with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h during the night is forecast for Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
According to the SMN (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional), on Friday, “cold front number 32 will move across northeastern and eastern Mexico, bringing showers and heavy rain to these regions.
“The Arctic air mass driving the front will generate a very strong to intense “Norte” wind event in Tamaulipas and Veracruz, extending overnight to the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca and Chiapas), Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, with high waves along the coast.
“A significant drop in temperatures is also expected in the northern, northeastern, and eastern states, with frost in the higher elevations of the Northern Plateau and Central Plateau.”

For Saturday and Sunday, “cold front number 32 will move across southeastern Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to these regions, with isolated intense downpours forecast for areas of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco.
“The Arctic air mass driving the front will maintain a very strong to intense “Norte” wind event along the Gulf of Mexico coast, the Yucatán Peninsula, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Gulf of Tehuantepec, with high waves along the coasts.
‘A marked drop in temperatures is also expected across much of the country with frost in the higher elevations of the Northern Plateau and the Central Plateau. There is also a possibility of snow or sleet on the peaks of Popocatépetl, Iztaccíhuatl, Nevado de Toluca, Pico de Orizaba, and Cofre de Perote.

“By Monday, the front will extend over the Caribbean Sea, ceasing to affect Mexico. The mass of Arctic air that propelled it will move toward the Gulf of Mexico, so daytime temperatures will begin to gradually increase. However, cold to very cold conditions will persist during the mornings and nights.”
On Monday, U.S. winter storm Fern arrived, drenching the region with heavy rain and strong winds. That mass of cold air is slowly moving away from the peninsula, only to be replaced by another system, cold front 32 for Saturday.
