Medical marines evacuate cargo ship crew member off island of Cozumel

Cozumel, Q.R. — A cargo ship member experiencing symptoms of appendicitis was transferred to Cozumel hospital. Mexico’s Secretary of the Navy, acting as Coast Guard, provided the medical evacuation Tuesday.

The man was transferred from the ship at the request of medical personnel after showing initial symptoms of appendicitis. In a statement, the Secretary of the Navy reported the request for the medical evacuation was received through the Fifteenth Naval Zone.

The Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) of Cozumel met the ship and carried out the medical evacuation of a crew member in the vicinity of the Fontaur Marina.

“This action was carried out after receiving a call for help for the medical evacuation of a male crew member belonging to a supply ship who was presenting initial symptoms of appendicitis, for which it was urgent to receive specialized medical attention.

“The immediate departure of a Defender-type vessel from the ENSAR Cozumel, with trained personnel and Naval Health, was ordered to provide medical care to the crew member of said ship.

“As a result, after having located said ship, the person was medically evacuated and transferred to the dock where an ambulance was waiting for him to be transferred to a local hospital and receive specialized medical care,” they reported.
