Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado has signed an initiative to punish and fine animal abusers. She signed the initiative Thursday that will be sent to the City Council for approval.
If approved, the new laws will strengthen animal welfare and establish a fine for those found guilty of animal abuse in the municipality of Playa del Carmen.
The proposal seeks to strengthen the animal protection framework in the municipality and ensure that those who mistreat or abandon pets face consequences according to the law.

She also pointed out the need since in the last two weeks, more than 70 pet rescues have been made.
“Today we signed an initiative to strengthen animal welfare in Playa del Carmen,” she posted on social media Thursday.
“This proposal will be sent to the City Council to bolster animal protection and apply sanctions to those who mistreat or neglect their pets. Because in Playa del Carmen, we understand that animals deserve respect, protection, and care.
“Furthermore, in just two weeks since launching our Animal Welfare Brigade, we have already carried out more than 70 rescues, demonstrating that when the government and citizens work together, we can change realities.
“In Playa del Carmen, animal welfare is not just talk, it’s a priority.”
