Massive residential blaze consumes at least a dozen Tulum homes

Tulum, Q.R. — At least a dozen Tulum families have been left homeless after a massive residential blaze Wednesday night. Firemen, police and Civil Protection personnel responded to the 9:45 p.m. call for help due to the fast spreading flames.

Two house fires were reported to authorities in the Dos de Octubre neighborhood along the extension of Orión Sur Street between Mercurio and San Marcos. Firemen arrived to high shooting flames erupting from the two burning homes.

Dozens of area residents lined the street which was clogged by emergency services vehicles Wednesday night. Residents watched as flames grew and the fire spread from one property to another.

Authorities did their best to control flames, but according to a report from the Civil Protection Directorate, the fires were fanned by strong winds. At least a dozen modest homes, made mostly of wood and sheet metal, were consumed.

Municipal Police and National Guard were also at the scene Wednesday night keeping area residents away from the burning structures. There are reports of 16 burned homes as a result of the fire.

Local authorities have not reported on a possible cause or a final total of consumed houses. It is also not known if there were any causalities.
