López Obrador says Maya Train work ‘will not stop’ confirming Cancun-Playa del Carmen next week

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says even with the recent judicial ruling against section 5 south, construction on the Maya Train will not stop.

On Friday, López Obrador acknowledged the judicial ruling to stop work on section 5 south that was handed down by a Merida court more than a week ago. It is the government’s first public acknowledgement of the ruling.

López Obrador said that “the necessary studies were carried out” for the railway project, referring to the judicial order to stop work on the Playa del Carmen to Tulum section of Tren Maya until a court reviews its previous studies.

“Of course the necessary studies were carried out,” he responded to inquiring reporters at his morning press conference, commenting that work on section 5 south will continue.

He says there is a political interest behind the ruling and that this is the modus operandi of many of the so-called civil society organizations that are financed by private initiatives and the United States government, who never said anything in the past when they “destroyed the territory,” referring to Calica.

“We are respectful of the judges’ decision. We are going to comply. All the studies are going to be delivered, but the train is not going to stop.

“They may tell us not to work, but we have many sections to continue building,” he said.

These organizations, he said, hire lawyers to hinder the government projects as they did with the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, however, López Obrador says that his administration will continue.

During the press conference, he confirmed the inauguration of section 5 north next week and also confirmed his appearance at the inauguration that will see the tracks become operational between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

“We are going to make the journey from Palenque by train to Cancun, getting off in Chichén Itzá to inaugurate the museum and from there we go up. We go to Cancun and the next day we inaugurate from Cancun to Playa,” he said.
