Legal progress being made on new 2.7 billion peso Isla Mujeres Tourist Boulevard

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The state government says it is now ready to begin work on the Cancun-Costa Mujeres tourist corridor. The Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development (Sedetus) says they are nearly ready to start on the first 15 kilometers of the 25 that will make up the new road.

According to Sedetus head José Alberto Alonso Ovando, they are waiting on the arrival of the fedeal funding needed to start the project.

He explained that the right of way extends to Costa Mujeres, since the first section is an intermunicipal zone between Benito Juárez (Cancun) and Isla Mujeres. That zone is located within the state’s legal reserve, allowing them to start to project there.

“On the Isla Mujeres side, it’s a historical right. We already have that road, it’s already built. We’re not going to expand the road, we’re going to work on what’s already there,” he said. He added that Playa Mujeres has also donated four kilometers of right-of-way to the municipality of Isla Mujeres.

“Then we reach Santa Fátima and Francisco Javier where the land is national and occupied by people with documents that very possibly don’t comply with all regulations.

Legal progress being made on new Isla Mujeres mainland road

“The situation is already being verified by the technical committee of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation. Therefore, the current right of way allows us to work on 15 kilometers,” he explained.

He says while they are waiting for federal funding, they are working on the process of obtaining environmental authorization for the final nine kilometers. The finished project will consist of a 25.4 kilometers road with a connection López Portillo Avenue in Cancun to La Angostura on the mainland of Isla Mujeres.

The project was announced in October of 2024. The new road, Tourist Boulevard, will connect the city of Cancun with Costa Maya, the busy tourist area of mainland Isla Mujeres. According to a report by Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama, 2.7 billion pesos of federal funding will be spent on the construction of the road. The new 25-plus kilometers will be an extension of an already existing roadway.
