Lázaro Cárdenas, Q.R. — The first forest fire of the season was recorded Tuesday in Lázaro Cárdenas. The municipality’s first fire was recorded in the Santo Domingo jungle after it spread from a fire started in west Playa del Carmen.

Forest fire fighters from the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), Civil Protection and communal volunteers continue to battle the fire. Personnel are fighting the Santo Domingo community fire, which so far, is only consuming dry grass.
Civil Protection Director Irving Núñez reported that since Thursday they have been battling the blaze that started on communal land in El Tintal in west Playa del Carmen. That fire has since spread to the Santa Melba area and is now in Santo Domingo.
According to Núñez, more than 50 firefighters have been deployed to contain flames, however, wind and lack of access have complicated the work. He did not specify how many acres have been consumed by the fire.

Núñez said that due to a lack of access, firefighting efforts were not carried out Monday. Instead, firefighters are focusing on drone overflights to determine the exact size and location of the fire so they can deal with the fire more efficiently. He said with that information, forest firefighters resumed the battle Tuesday.
