Tulum, Q.R. — President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the upcoming inauguration of section 5 South of the Maya Train. This weekend, López Obrador is scheduled to arrive in the state for the opening of the Playa del Carmen – Tulum section of 5 south.
Prior to his arrival, last minute preparations are being made to ensure completion of the station which was designed and built by the architectural firm Aidia Studio.
The up and coming Tulum Tren Maya station is a concrete and steel structure to house the platforms and lobby. It has been built with a lattice roof for ventilation and natural lighting. The interior has been created with regional chukum wood to provide a rustic feel.
The new Tulum Tren Maya station will connect section 5 (from Cancun to Tulum) with section 6, which runs to the Chetumal airport. Along the way, section 6 will stop at the Tulum International Airport and the towns of Limones and Bacalar before its final stop at Chetumal. That section will also provide a direct connection the Jaguar National Park and access to several archaeological sites.
This weekend, only section 5 south that runs Playa del Carmen – Tulum is being inaugurated since sections 6 and 7 are still under construction. On September 1, López Obrador announced that “the complete circuit of the Maya Train will be inaugurated in the first half of September.” According to AMLO, to date, the Tren Maya project has cost more than 500 billion pesos.
