Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Óscar David Lozano Águila says Tren Maya has transported more than 200,000 passengers since its inauguration. He also says the entire circuit will be operational in September.
During the Monday morning press conference, Tren Maya General Director Óscar David Lozano Águila reported 246,929 train travelers in 205 days of operation. Those figures provided are for the current operational sections 1 to 5 north. Sections 5 south, 6 and 7 are still under construction.
“The current route of the Maya Train goes from Palenque, Chiapas, to Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, where a punctual and quality service is offered for the benefit of users,” he said during the morning press conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“Since its inauguration on December 16, 2023, the Maya Train has transported 246,929 people in 205 days of operation, a figure equivalent to filling the Azteca Stadium 2.6 times,” he explained.
“The 1,554-kilometer circuit will be completed in September to connect and promote the development of 36 municipalities in Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatán,” he added Monday.
Lozano Águila says the Maya Train is advancing with the delivery of 17 convoys according to the established schedule in order to provide service to national and foreign tourists and local residents.
Alstom CEO, Maite Ramos Gómez, announced that train number 17 arrived in Cancún, Quintana Roo, on July 11. The company delivered 10 trains with four diesel cars called Xiinbal, and seven trains with four dual-mode cars using diesel and electric motors.
The transfers of the 17 trains from the Alstom plant in Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, total more than 32,000 kilometers traveled by land to their destination in Quintana Roo.
In this regard, he recognized the coordinated work of the Secretariats of National Defense and Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, as well as the National Guard, which guarantee the safe travels of each train weighing from 42 to 50 tons.
The next phase of delivery includes three long-distance trains. He says convoy number 18 will arrive in September this year, while the remaining two are still in production.
The long-distance train, called P’atal, will offer restaurant service and comfortable cabins with beds, bathrooms and showers throughout its seven carriages.
