Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) is looking into a way to offer cross border bus service between Isla Mujeres and Cancun. The state agency says they are investigating a metropolitan transport service for mainland residents.
Imoveqroo Director Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia, says the neighboring municipality is being considered since Cancun is currently working on a city-wide transportation project.
Imoveqroo (Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) is hoping to include Isla Mujeres before that Cancun project is finalized. He said a bus service between Cancun and Isla Mujeres would improve mobility for residents.
Alcázar Urrutia says the immediate proposal is that both Isla Mujeres and Cancun units can cross their corresponding borders to drop off passengers. If approved, the service would contribute to improving the established routes and meet the demand of the two unlinked municipalities.
“We are going to look for a way for Isla Mujeres vehicles to enter Cancun to drop off people so they can make the transfer. That is why I have spoken of the need for metropolitan public transportation where there are routes that cross the municipalities because cities grow and the city of Cancun has already exceeded the limits of the municipality, which is why we have to think about metropolitan transportation,” he said.
The proposal includes a route from Racho Viejo, in addition to Colosio Boulevard, the Hotel Zone, Kabah and the Isla Mujeres corridor.
The proposal was made after Isla Mujeres mainland began its first public bus transport service. As of November 4, five buses began travel between 13 stops around the Continental Zone.
