Formal charges laid against former police officer in disappearance of Cancun man and woman

Cancun, Q.R. — A former Quintana Roo police officer arrested last week for kidnappings has been charged. Roberto “N” has been charged in the disappearance of two people from the city of Cancun.

The unnamed man and woman disappeared in February of 2020 after being forcefully removed from a central city bar by armed men. On Thursday, authorities reported on the formal charges laid against the former police officer.

Roberto “N”, alias “Puebla” “was charged for his alleged participation in acts possibly constituting the crime of disappearance of persons to the detriment of a male and a female whose identity is reserved.

“He is accused of events that occurred in the early morning of February 22, 2020, in a bar located in Superblock 19 of Cancun where armed men entered and deprived the victims of their freedom.”

Police say that the kidnapped man worked for Roberto “N” and were in the midst of a property conflict at the time he disappeared.

The State Attorney General also confirmed that “Roberto “N” worked as a municipal and ministerial police officer and was considered a priority target of the Quintana Roo Crime Atlas,” a most wanted list “due to his high level of danger and his involvement in the disappearance of people.”

The presiding judge has ordered the precautionary measure of preventive detention for Roberto “N” for the time that the judicial process lasts. Roberto “N” was arrested last week in the town of Tres Reyes, in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, an area that borders with Cancun.
