Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A brush fire along the Felipe Carrillo Puerto highway was brought under control Tuesday. Firefighters battled the blaze in response to poor visibility reported by motorists.
According to Fire Chief Neyro Alonso Cen Kauil, drivers reported the fire after thick smoke began to fill the air and significantly reduce highway visibility.

Authorities located the source of the fire in an area on the other side of the municipal landfill.
“After receiving the report about the brush fire towards the town of Señor, as a reference point past the garbage dump, we proceeded to verify and the information we had was that there was a lot of smoke along the road and the fire was spreading,” he said.
Upon arriving at the site, firemen found a 50 square meter area had already burned. They proceeded to extinguish flames on the sides and the right-of-way where the fire was spreading.
Fire Chief Cen Kauil said the goal was to control it and prevent it from entering the jungle and becoming a wild forest fire. Cen Kauil did not comment on a possible cause for the Tuesday afternoon blaze.
