Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Authorities are reviewing new accident video that came to light Monday after the death of six people Sunday. A still shot taken from the security camera of the company transport van involved in the accident shows the driver parked and eating when he was hit.
That video contradicts the initial public statement made by the FGE Sunday who reported “based on the first investigations, it can be determined that, due to the weather conditions in the city, one of the drivers lost control of their vehicle, invading the opposite lane, causing the accident.”
In that two vehicle crash, six people died, one of whom was the parked transport driver and only occupant of the van.
The passengers from inside the SUV have been identified as a group of Argentinians who hired a private vehicle to tour them around the area. According to information provided by state authorities Monday during a press conference, the group did not know one another.
They were staying in various accommodations in Tulum and had hired the driver of a private vehicle to drive them around. Two women and three men were killed when, about 30 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, their vehicle collided with the tourist van.
The deceased have been identified as Nahuel López, Sibella Hernan Ezequiel, Silvia Díaz Vanesa Paola, Amengual Geronimo and Maximiliano Nicolás Laviano, all of Argentine nationality, as well as 33-year-old Freddy Omar Quijano Carrillo, the Mexican driver of the van.
A 30-year-old Argentinean man and 23-year-old Argentinean woman survived the crash. Both remain in separate hospitals. The group were heading to Playa del Carmen at the time of the accident.
During the Monday morning press conference, State Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez said the State Attorney General’s Office is continuing with the investigation.
