Merida, Yucatan — Police were on Yucatan streets Friday assisting stranded motorists who found themselves stuck in flooded areas. Numerous regions were left underwater Friday due to intense rains across the Yucatan Peninsula.

“In response to the heavy rains, the Secretariat of Public Security maintained an operational deployment at various locations throughout the state to address citizen reports, support the public, and reduce risks on public roads,” the SSP Yucatan reported late Friday night.
People, such as fishermen, who had boats, used them to navigate severely flooded streets.

Dozens of residential streets across the state were left under under as well as some residential homes. The intense rains started Friday afternoon, dumping around 88.6 mms of rain in a few hours.
“As part of these efforts, SSP officers removed fallen trees blocking roads, assisted in rescuing vehicles affected by water accumulation, and helped drivers and passengers in dangerous situations.”
Police were out in full force removing roads that had been blocked by fallen trees.

“Support was also provided to communities affected by flooding, with actions aimed at safeguarding the well-being of residents and promptly addressing emergencies resulting from the weather conditions.
“The operational presence remains active in coordination with the relevant agencies to respond to citizen reports and reinforce assistance in areas where needed.
“The SSP urges the public to drive with caution, avoid flooded areas, and report any emergencies to 911. We continue working to protect those who live in and travel through Yucatán.”

The cities of Merida, Chelem,Yucalpetén, and Port of Progerso were some of the most affected. Merida’s historic, south and west were heavily flooded after being dumped with 49.8 mms of rain.
Yucatan authorities have not reported any injuries or deaths due to the storm.
