Extortionist wanted in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Bacalar returned to state from Tlaxcala

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — An extortionist wanted in four municipalities of the state has been found and arrested. Police say Ángel Arturo “N” was returned to the state of Quintana Roo Monday night after being tracked down in the state of Tlaxcala.

He is the third to be arrested for his alleged involvement in extorting a business owner of 17,500 a month from each of his four restaurants. According to authorities, “Ángel Arturo “N” who along with two other individuals, charged “floor rights” to the owner of businesses selling food in Benito Juárez, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Bacalar.

“The events for which Ángel Arturo “N” is subject to investigation occurred since December 2023, when the victim, after demands and threats, began paying the monthly amount of 17,500 pesos, for “floor rights”, for his establishments selling prepared foods located in the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Bacalar, for a total of 70,000 pesos per month.”

Police say Ángel Arturo “N” had as accomplices, two others identified as José Gerardo “N” and Ramón “N”, both of whom have already been arrested and charged.

The arrests were made following a complaint by the victim. Ángel Arturo “N” is the third to face extortion charges. In a statement, authorities said investigative police officers indicate that the three individuals are part of a violent criminal gang dedicated to drug dealing and extortion.

José Gerardo “N” was arrested August 2 as part of the three extorting the same Quintana Roo business.

In early August, José Gerardo “N”, one of the accomplices, was arrested in the state of Nayarit and returned to Quintana Roo. At the time of his arrest, police said he was also being investigated for extorting five other businesses.
