Extensive bands of Tropical Storm Sara soaks coast

Costa Maya, Q.R. — Tropical Storm Sara arrived early Sunday morning, soaking a majority of the coast of Quintana Roo with its extensive bands. State officials worked into the night providing damaged homes with roofs before the arrival of Sara. Several homes in the south recently lost their roofs due to ongoing strong winds.

Governor Mara Lezama reported through her social networks that her administration provided direct aid to those people who were most affected. Trucks arrived with men and sheet metal to reinstall roofs before Sara’s rain.

“We are bringing sheets and aid directly and as a priority to the people who lost everything with the strong winds in the southern area of Quintana Roo, due to the proximity of Tropical Storm Sara,” wrote the Governor.

“The state government has intensified efforts in the hardest hit communities, providing essential supplies and support for the reconstruction of damaged homes. The action reaffirms the administration’s commitment to vulnerable families in the face of this type of natural phenomena,” she reported.

On Saturday night, the State Coordination of Civil Protection made their rounds to support citizens in Chetumal due to the rains that began to arrive in the south due to the proximity of Sara.

Tropical Storm Sara began to enter the region early Sunday. Slow moving Sara arrived with maximum sustained winds of 65 kms/h and gusts of 85 kms/h. According to the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN), Sara is crossing the bottom of the Yucatan Peninsula west-northwest at 7 kms/h.

The storm’s extensive bands are producing heavy rainfall across most of the state of Quintana Roo as it passes over land. Sara is forecast to exit into the Gulf of Mexico early Monday morning. From there, meteorologists have forecast the storm to accelerate in warm waters as it makes its way toward U.S. land.
