Exploding transformers leaves parts of Cancun, Isla Mujeres without power

Cancun, Q.R. — The Wednesday morning explosion of a CFE transformer left dozens in SM 91 without power. The fiery explosion was captured on a nearby home security camera showing the transformer burst into flames.

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) explosion was caused by the rupture of a high-voltage cable near their substation. Municipal authorities were at the scene of the fire, which left dozens of homes in a blackout.

CFE worked to restore power and provide maintenance to affected residential Cancun areas.

However, islanders were not as fortunate with a quick repair. Monday around midnight, a transformer that supplies power to an entire block of the neighborhood burned out.

Residents were left without electricity for more than two days before a temporary solution was installed. The transformer that blew Monday night was finally replace Wednesday, but with an old transformer.

CFE were made aware of the Monday night explosion that left part of the central Salinas area of Isla Mujeres without electricity for more than 35 hours. On Tuesday afternoon, personnel arrived with a generator but were unable to get it working.

On Wednesday around noon, CFE were back on the island installing an old transformer as a temporary solution to restore island electricity.

According to available information, a new transformer to replace the burned unit will take two months to arrive from Merida. In the meantime, CFE installed an old transformer from pole replacement work they’ve been doing on the island since early July.
