Eight kilometers of Punta Sur road under rehabilitation

Cozumel, Q.R. — Island authorities have begun a revamp project of eight kilometers of a busy roadway in the south. The road to the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park is being rehabilitated, reported the General Director of the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC), Juanita Alonso Marrufo.

The initiative is part of the FPMC’s commitment to the conservation and improvement of its tourist areas, ensuring that the improvements respect the ecological balance of the natural environment.

The project includes the complete rehabilitation of eight kilometers of rustic road in Punta Sur, which will be completed in two stages. First, the four kilometers that extend from the main entrance to the Celarain Lighthouse and then the four kilometers that lead to the beach and restaurant area.

The process includes mechanical scarification of the land, application of natural materials from the region such as sascab, humidification and compaction, ensuring that the road is more passable without altering its ecological essence, she said.

These actions address visitors’ requests to improve their experience visiting the park, said Alonso Marrufo, who expressed her gratitude for the support of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, who has promoted tourism as an engine of development.

She also emphasized the collaborative work with the state Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, who also chairs the FPMC board, and reported that tours have been conducted at the sites managed by the institution to assess maintenance and rehabilitation needs.

Alonso Marrufo also announced that in conjunction with the State Tourism Secretariat, work to improve the infrastructure of Chankanaab Natural Park is expected to begin in the second half of the year, thus strengthening the operation and image of one of the island’s most iconic and visited sites.
