Tulum, Q.R. — The driver of a company van that slammed into the back end of a parked bus was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Tuesday night accident happened along the federal highway approximately seven kilometers from the town of Tulum.
The driver of the van hit the back of the bus, which according to reports, was “badly parked” and “without lights”. The van, which belongs to a company working a nearby section of Maya Train, was completely destroyed.
Police and paramedics arrived in response to motorists reports. Several people traveling the highway stopped to help the driver of the van.
It was around 11:00 p.m. when emergency services were requested at the scene north of town. National Guard Highways directed traffic around the site since debris from the accident and the arrival of emergency vehicles left one of the lanes partially blocked. Traffic was slow going for more than an hour.
According to the National Guard Highways report, the accident occurred after the bus operator parked incorrectly on the shoulder where it invaded part of the lane in the direction of Playa del Carmen.
The destroyed van and heavily damaged bus were towed to a corral and the accident report turned over to the Prosecutor’s Office.
Earlier that evening, the driver of a private car was killed in Tulum after slamming into the back of a parked dump truck. A second person from inside the car was rushed to hospital.
