Driver surprised-inspected beside Cancun CFE substation with stolen fuel charged

Cancun, Q.R. — One person arrested in Cancun earlier this month for possession of stolen fuel has been charged. The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) says they have obtained a formal indictment against one person for illegal possession of hydrocarbons.

The FGR, through its Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office in the state of Quintana Roo, obtained a formal indictment against José “R” for the crime of illegal possession of hydrocarbons.

Members of the National Guard arrested José “R” on December 1 after he pulled up inside a CFE substation with a 14,000 liter semi load of diesel. The driver was stopped at his destination in SM 54 and arrested after being unable to legally prove where the fuel originated.

According to the FGR, “a report was received from the Physical Security of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), in which it was reported that within the facilities of the Cancun Central Turbo Gas on Av. Rodrigo Gómez Kabah, they surprised this person in possession of illicit hydrocarbon.”

The federal agency said the driver was found in possession of 14,665 liters of fuel inside a tanker with a capacity for 46,000 liters. During the National Guard inspection, José “R” was unable to prove his legal possession of the diesel and was subsequently arrested.

On Monday, he was charged with stealing fuel from the federal government. The presideing judge has ordered him to remain in pretrial detention.
