Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Police have arrested who they say is the leader of a criminal group operating the Isla Mujeres mainland. The leader, along with four others, were taken into custody on outstanding warrants for extortion.

The State Attorney General (FGE) said Wednesday they “arrested five people in flagrante delicto, among them Raúl “N”, alias “Güero Palma”, leader of the criminal group Güero Palma dedicated to drug sales and extortion in Costa Mujeres on the continental zone of Isla Mujeres.”

The group of five, the FGE added, are “also considered priority targets of the State’s Criminal Atlas.”

Raúl “N”, alias “Güero Palma”, Axel Raúl “N”, Kevin Yahir “N”, Josefina Candelaria “N” and Kimberly “N” were arrested for being related to acts of possible drug dealing and violation of the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives. All five were taken into custody at the intersection of Arco Vial and Rancho Viejo Avenues in SM 242 of Cancun.

They were arrested by elements of the FGE, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, the Secretariat of the Navy, the Secretariat of National Defense, the National Guard and the Secretariat of Citizen Security of the State.

During a search of the suspects, authorities seized bags of green, dry marijuana-like plants, as well as a whitish solid substance with the characteristics of the drug known as crystal, a 9mm caliber handgun, a magazine loaded with live cartridges, as well as a Nissan Frontier vehicle with license plates from the state of Yucatan.

Criminal group operating out of Costa Mujeres captured

“The five detainees were served with an arrest warrant for their probable participation in extortion crimes, against an individual victim,” the FGE reported.

At the end of December, three people were arrested in relation to the shooting of a street vendor on a Costa Mujeres beach. According to the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), the Sunday shooting victim was a street vendor of Mexican nationality. Police have not said if that shooting is connected to the criminal group they captured Tuesday.
