Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Three people have been arrested in relation to the shooting of a street vendor on an Isla Mujeres beach. The trio were handcuffed and formally arrested in response to 9-1-1 reports of gunfire Saturday.
The unnamed shooting victim was rushed to a Cancun hospital with at least one gunshot wound. According to the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), he’ll live. Police were the ones who found him laying in the sand after being shot. The shooting victim has only been identified as a street vendor of Mexican nationality.
Police were at the beach of mainland Isla Mujeres around noon Saturday in response to reports of gunfire. The shot man was located by police during a search for the shooters along the Costa Mujeres beach.
Three people alleged responsible for the shooting were also located and taken into custody. The SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) has not named those in custody.
In an official statement, the state agency reported on the Saturday afternoon incident that took place on a Costa Mujeres beach in the municipality of mainland Isla Mujeres.
“The SSC reports the arrests of three people after detonations in Costa Mujeres. Aa result of the coordinated operation between security agencies, three people were captured in the area known as Costa Mujeres, who could be involved in the crime that occurred at noon this Saturday.
“The now detained, who were carrying illicit substances among their belongings, will be placed at the disposal of the State Attorney General’s Office for the corresponding investigation.
Their arrests were made “in relation to the report of a person injured by a firearm in the area known as Costa Mujeres. The report was registered and attended to at the emergency number 911, to implement a search, location and protection operation in the area after recording detonations against a person identified as a “street vendor”.
“After cordoning off the area, the elements entered the sandbanks where they located a male, of Mexican nationality, who had gunshot wounds, so they requested the support of an ambulance to be able to transfer him to a hospital in the city, where his health condition was reported as stable.”
Police have not speculated on a possible motive for the targeted attack.
