Cozumel, Q.R. — The island of Cozumel has begun installing posts to house public surveillance cameras. The installation of the posts for the placement of video surveillance cameras by the municipal government is being done based on a field study, City Hall said in a statement.
The locations were chosen using drones and geolocation devices to have greater monitoring coverage in the areas where they are being placed, explained Carlos Mendoza Quijano of the Cozumel City Council.
During an interview, he said the objective of the current administration headed by Juanita Alonso Marrufo is to inhibit crime or, where appropriate, have monitoring support with high-tech cameras.
He said that although some of these poles are being installed outside the median area, as is the case of the one located on 65th Avenue and 8th Street, the one on 11th and 65th Avenue and the one located on 11th and 90th Avenue, these, like some others, were strategically located to avoid obstacles and have the necessary angle to be able to observe in all directions and not just a portion.
In these cases, he clarified that the medians will be adequate to cover the area of these posts, while, in the case of sidewalks, the municipal government will have to create ramps that help pedestrians avoid the posts.
In the case of trees, pruning will be carried out to give visibility to these surveillance devices that will be installed in the coming days.
The municipal government invested more than 39 million pesos in the installation of 20 poles for which a detailed month-long study by Public Security,Transit and the Secretary of the Navy was carried out.
Mendoza Quijano said a drone and geolocating devices were used in order to have precision and verify that the cameras will indeed be in the correct place.
“We are working at full speed in this effort to maintain peace on the island where the installation of the posts along with the adaptation of the sidewalks and central medians must be completed by the end of January.
“The operation of the cameras will be in February, which will be operated, in the case of those of the municipal government, in the module that will be found in the Public Security Directorate of the island,” he explained.
