Cozumel ships 95 tons of tire recycling to Tabasco plant

Cozumel, Q.R. — Through the Recyclable Materials Collection Center (Camar), the island of Cozumel shipped 95 tons of tires for repurposing. The tires were transported by truck Wednesday to a tire recycling center in the city of Macuspana, Tabasco.

Francisco Alejandro Abad Vázquez, the Deputy Director of Camar, commented that 60 percent of the tires that enter the recycling centre are collected on public roads through the ongoing junk-removal campaign.

The other 40 percent, he said, are dropped off at the collection centre by citizens where they are received (free of charge) by staff.

Abad Vázquez said his Camar crew worked from early in the morning to load the 53-cubic-foot trailer which left Wednesday afternoon for the Geocycle plant in Macuspana. Geocycle is a global company that uses geoprocessing to produce Apasco cement.

Abad Vázquez explained that the advantages of co-processing tires include reducing the need for natural resources, decreasing the demand for fossil fuels, contributing to environmental conservation, aiding proper waste disposal, and destroying hazardous components.

The Municipal Government of Cozumel says the recycling is part of its commitment to maintaining a cleaner island and safeguarding the community’s health which, with the rains, become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and potential causes of diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya.
