Cozumel declares start of season with early arrival of sea turtles

Cozumel, Q.R. — With the early arrival of a loggerhead sea turtle , the 2025 nesting season officially opens. The Punta Sur Ecotourism Park officially kicked off the season where the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) Turtle Camp operates.

Biologist Rafael Chacón Díaz, Director of Conservation and Environmental Education at the FPMC, reported that this registration launches the sea turtle protection program.

According to Chacón Díaz, that includes daily afternoon and nighttime patrols to locate and identify the nests of the two species that arrive on the coast of Cozumel: the loggerhead and the white turtle.

“This is the first nest of the season, which will run until October. We invite anyone interested in volunteering to call 987 112 9791,” he said while emphasizing the importance of public participation for the program’s success.

According to Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the General Director of the FPMC, they are a pioneer in sea turtle protection with 37 uninterrupted years of work in environmental education, monitoring, and conservation.

As part of this commitment, the camp has held weekly beach cleanups since the beginning of the year, supported by volunteers, to remove debris that could hinder or endanger the turtles on their way to lay their eggs.

Recently, biologist Ricardo Peralta Muñoz, technical manager of the Punta Sur Turtle Camp, participated in the installation and first regular session of the State Committee for the Protection, Conservation, and Management of Sea Turtles in Quintana Roo, with the goal of strengthening joint actions in favor of turtle species in the state.
