Cozumel Civil Protection works with Navy to save two swimmers pulled out to sea

Cozumel, Q.R. — Civil Protection, in coordination with the Navy, saved two struggling swimmers from the sea Tuesday off the southern end of the island. The swimmers were saved from drowning when they were pulled out into deep water by strong currents.

Personnel from the Cozumel Civil Protection Directorate, in coordination with Public Security and the Navy (Semar), carried out the rescue of two people visiting the island from the State of Mexico.

A 59 year old man and 36 year old male were saved after they were seen swimming with difficulty in the waters of Playa Uvas, south of Cozumel Island, the Directorate said in a statement.

A lifeguard indicated that he had seen two men in the sea, apparently being swept away by the current and had already crossed the safety limit of the floating marine buoys.

The first authority to arrive at the scene was Unit 7155 of the Municipal Police, who confirmed the event and requested the support of the corresponding corporations to carry out the rescue.

The operation was carried out in coordination with the Navy with the support of an ENSAR vessel who managed to recover the people and transfer them to their facilities to receive medical attention and assessment.
