Costa Maya taxi unions agree to study to justify fare increase

Mahahual, Q.R. — An evaluation will be done as part of the Imoveqroo requirements for taxi rate increase requests. The Autonomous University of Quintana Roo (Uqroo) will carry out the necessary studies to evaluate the number of taxi concessions and current fares for the unions of Bacalar and Mahahual.

Martha Patricia Poot, the General Secretary of the Joaquín Hendricks Díaz Union, said the studies are a crucial step to meet the requirements by the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo).

Poot explained that after a rescheduled meeting with government authorities, the meeting was held in Cancun with the government secretary Cristina Torres as mediator, instead of in Chetumal as initially planned. There, it was agreed that the study would be done to justify the fare increase requests.

The union leader said they made contact with Uqroo Monday to start the study which will  involve evaluating the needs of taxi drivers as well as the public demand in hotels, restaurants and residential areas.

Once both unions submit the required documentation, the study is expected to take approximately six months.

In January, upset taxi drivers from Bacalar and Mahahual were stationed outside the Chetumal offices of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) due to the lack of response regarding a fair increase from the state agency.
