Tulum, Q.R. — Federal authorities from the Natural Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) met with nautical tourist service providers to talk rates. The group met Tuesday to discuss establishing better rates for nautical service providers within the Tulum National Park.

Both sides met in hopes of coming to an agreement that would eliminate the abuse of intermediaries. The group of Tulum tourist service providers also requested they be allowed to offer their services at agreed upon points inside the Jaguar National Park.
José Juan Domínguez Calderón, the Director of the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve, reported that they are working to establish an organization of agreed upon fair prices so that everyone has an equal opportunity to sell and provide the service.
He stated that they are in the process of allowing the nautical community to organize itself to eliminate old customs and provide an opportunity for fair trade in the tourist services offered at Jaguar Park.
“The old customs of the people who are selling the tours are to offer them to tourists at a high price and in turn, pay a small fee to the service provider.
“Right now, what we want is to reverse that and ensure that those who benefit most from are the people who are providing the service and not those who are offering the services,” he explained.
Domínguez Calderón says they are analying the request to allow tourist service providers to be able to have sales points at the entrance to the archaeological zone and at Jaguar Park.

“It will be analyzed because with the Jaguar Park architectural project, the trend was to eliminate all those modules that were installed irregularly. It’s a request they made, but it’s not a guarantee that it will happen,” he said.
The group will meet again with Fernando Orozco Ojeda, the Regional Director for the Yucatan Peninsula and the Mexican Caribbean of the Natural Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP), to discuss the feasibility of the proposals and regulations.
