Company submits request to construct 105 meter long underground pedestrian walkway in central Cozumel

Cozumel, Q.R. — A company is hoping for approval to construct an underground pedestrian walkway between Cozumel buildings. Company SSA México SA de CV has submitted their paperwork for approval of the private project that would connect two commercial establishments.

The project, Pedestrian connectivity between the shopping malls of the International Cruise Terminal and Park Royal in Cozumel, was submitted November 12. In its Environmental Impact Statement, the company says the project is for the construction of a 105-meter-long tunnel under a municipal road.

“The structural projection for the tunnel will be a concrete box which will cross under the main avenue and part of a small square. In the access areas there will be an open box to house the fixed concrete stairs and the escalators,” the project document reads.

If approved, the underground pedestrian walkway would be built under Rafael E. Melgar Avenue with two ascent/descent transition areas to connect both shopping malls.

“The objective of the project is to ensure continuous pedestrian traffic between the commercial plazas of the International Cruise Terminal and Park Royal in Cozumel, offering users greater security by avoiding crossing a road with high vehicular flow, in addition to significantly improving the experience of cruise passengers and visitors in the area,” the company said in their submitted documents.

The proposed project is at a cost of 88 million pesos with a period of 24 months of construction.
