Cold front to keep Yucatan Peninsula wet for one more day

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A front of cold air crossing the Gulf of Mexico will continue to keep the Yucatan Peninsula wet. Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) says Cold Front No. 7 is responsible for the wet weekend that, at times, caused heavy rainfall.

The cold front will continue to move across the northeast, interacting with the subtropical jet stream and influx of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. A second front, No. 8, is likely on its way. “Front number Eight is located on the northern and northeastern portions with stationary front characteristics,” Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil Quintana Roo said Monday.

For Monday, meteorologists report “a high-altitude trough located over the Yucatán Peninsula and the entry of moisture from the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico into the peninsular region will maintain cloudy skies over the state of Quintana Roo.”

The state is likely to continue with intervals of showers with occasional heavy rainfall (accumulated amounts of 25 to 50 mm) accompanied by thunderstorms and a very hot atmosphere. Winds with gusts of 40 km/h, mainly over coastal areas, are also forecast for Monday.
