Holbox, Q.R. — Cleanup efforts from a massive fire on the island of Holbox began Saturday after the completion of investigations. Cleanup efforts were started after officials toured the affected areas and Cancun firemen determined exactly what happened.

On Saturday, Governor Mara Lezama toured the scene of the several-block island fire with Lázaro Cárdenas Mayor Nivardo Mena who reported damage to nine properties, up from the four initially reported.
During the Thursday blaze, one person was airlifted from the island of Holbox to a Playa del Carmen hospital for burn treatment to both legs. In a statement, the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) of Playa del Carmen said “the Secretariat of Citizen Security provided air transport support to a person with burn injuries for evaluation and medical care.

“Thanks to the support and coordination between authorities during the fire that occurred Thursday on the island of Holbox, the person agreed to be transported to Playa del Carmen for evaluation and medical care. With our commitment to serving our citizens, we will continue working to maintain the safety and well-being of everyone.”

On Sunday, Bomberos Cancun said they had completed their investigation into the fire and were participating in the aftermath cleanup of the devastating fire.
“As part of the plan to continue activating basic services in Holbox, Lázaro Cárdenas, support was provided by the Cancun Fire Department and Cancun Civil Protection in coordination with municipal, state and federal authorities.
“At the direction of Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, specialized personnel were deployed to assess the damage following the fire that occurred a few days ago in the area. Prior to the arrival of State Governor Mara Lezama, technical inspections were conducted to establish action priorities.

“During the tour, six affected properties were inspected, and, upon official instruction, debris removal and demolition of damaged structures in uninhabited areas began. We remind all business and residential owners and managers: prevention saves lives. It is essential to have fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, evacuation routes and basic emergency training.

“We will continue working together for the safety of the population. Don’t wait for an emergency to act. Prevention starts today! Serve and Protect!” An LP gas leak in the kitchen of a restaurant has been the said cause of the fire.
