Holbox, Q.R. — Authorities access the damage left behind by a raging fire on the island of Holbox Thursday. Governor Mara Lezama toured the damaged area with Lázaro Cárdenas Mayor Nivardo Mena reporting damage to nine properties.

During her Saturday tour, Lezama expressed her gratitude for the work and coordination of Holbox residents.
“I sincerely thank the people of Holbox for their solidarity, commitment and example during the emergency. Your participation has been key to confronting the fire and advancing the recovery of the area,” she said regarding the volunteers who helped firemen.
She also highlighted the participation of the Navy and the Army who have begun working to support in the cleanup efforts following inspections to determine what happened and take action to prevent it from happening again.

Touring Damero Street with the Mayor to oversee the cleanup and restoration work, the Governor highlighted the presence of Bryan “N”, a municipal police officer who heroically rescued two people from the fire.
“These are people who make a difference,” she said.

The Federal Electricity Commission team was also recognized for the great work they did in shutting down the power for four hours to prevent further accidents and then restoring it almost immediately.
During the tour, Lezama visited and toured the Health Center and the Holbox Animal Shelter where she delivered a ton of dog and cat food.

In support of the relief efforts, members of the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), the Fire Department and CAPA, as well as citizens, participated. Lezama said the municipality of Playa del Carmen sent four firefighters.
The fire is believed to have started at the Mr. Happy Restaurant affecting nine properties. Power was restored to six affected properties Friday. A gas leak in the kitchen of the restaurant is being investigated as the cause of the fire.
