City workers get a fright finding live crocodile in central drainage system

Chetumal, Q.R. — Chetumal firemen were successful in removing a live crocodile from a street-level grate Saturday. City Hall workers in central Chetumal noticed the large reptile while clearing debris ahead of the forecast rain.

City workers found the live crocodile when they were clearing drains February 21, 2026.

Municipal workers from the Public Services department saw the two-meter long reptile lingering in the leaves a few inches below street-level under a metal drainage grate.

Local firemen were called to an area near the Flag Esplanade in central Chetumal to remove it. A group of authorities arrived to take out a section of the metal grate to access the crocodile after it wandered into the public drainage system.

Municipal employees sectioned off the street while the crocodile was tied and placed in the bed of a pickup for relocation. The crocodile has seen been released in a natural area outside the city.

Rescue personnel said they did not know how the crocodile entered the drainage system or how long it had been there, however, it was evaluated and found in good health before being released.
