City shuts public beach access to Playa Pelicanos due to extreme erosion

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Access to Playa Pelícanos in central Playa del Carmen has been closed due to extreme erosion. Weeks of ongoing strong winds have weakened what was left of the beach.

The beach area around 44th Street north has been closed due to extreme erosion February 13, 2026.

A beachfront structure has suffered damage with the weakening the natural support. With the constant lapping of strong waves, the ground finally gave way around the front of the building.

Passage in front of the building is also not possible due to a lack of dry sand. The entire beach has been eroded away and a sign placed by the city notifying beachgoers of its closure.

The Playa Pelicanos areas has been shut from the intersection of 44th Street and CTM. The closure was made to reduce accidents in this area of the Blue Flag certified beach.

The weakened sand caused a section of the building to collapse February 13, 2026.

The city of Playa del Carmen has been working with the state on a plan to correct the beach erosion recorded along the coast. The city has not released any information on the closure other than a posted sign.

Currently, the site remains restricted to the public.
