City closes developer project for blocking residential street without authorization

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The municipal government of Playa del Carmen shut down a construction project that lacked permits. Municipal inspectors paid a visit to the site Tuesday after receiving resident complaints last week.

Residents filed complaints with the city after the developing company used the public street to unload stone material, making the street impassable. Residents in the neighboring Bali subdivision made the complaint, reported Dory Aké Sierra, the PDC Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Works.

Aké Sierra said area residents were angry since they could not access their subdivision because the street was blocked with stone material. The street that the real estate company used for the material is a short cut used by residents to enter the Bali subdivision.

Aké Sierra said that upon learning of the events following the complaint, they inspected the area.

The official reported that in response to the complaint, they proceeded to place closure seals on the construction site located on Prolongación 115 Avenida Sur between Calle 57 and Calle 53 in the Ejidal neighborhood.

She confirmed that the development was closed for blocking a public street to carry out construction work. Specifically, the developer had opened the street to install sanitary drainage, preventing the passage of vehicles.

Aké Sierra said the seals were placed for carrying out work without the authorization of the municipal government. She said as of Tuesday, the company has not appeared to carry out the procedures and pay the fine.

She explained that if the city requirements are not met and the permits are not obtained, the work cannot be restarted.
