Chetumal, Q.R. — A week after the official inauguration of the Tren Maya in Chetumal, the station is finally up and running. The newly operating Maya Train station is the latest addition to the circuit.
It was inaugurated more than a week ago by Andrés Manuel López Obrador prior to the end of his presidency. Despite being inaugurated on September 29, the station was not finished. Now, however, the Chetumal Tren Maya station is finished and began operating Sunday.
In a brief message, Governor Mara Lezama announced the start of the Tren Maya station that now transports passengers to Bacalar.
“The Maya Train tourist station in Chetumal is now operating! The new starting point to explore the beauty of the Caribbean, the culture and the Mayan wealth awaits you in our capital,” she posted on social media.

While the station does not connect to the rest of the route due to unfinished construction along section 5 south, it does connect to Bacalar and sites in the south. Travelers from the Chetumal Maya Train station can visit nearby archaeological sites such as Oxtankah, the largest pre-Hispanic city in Chetumal Bay, and the Kohunlich archaeological site.
Train travelers can also visit Bacalar, a Magic Town, from where they can enjoy the Fort of San Felipe, the Piracy Museum, the Bacalar Lagoon and the Blue Cenote.
