CAPA detects dozens of illegal water connections during Cozumel inspection

Cozumel, Q.R. — Dozens of illegal water connections were found during a recent inspection in Cozumel. The home inspections were carried out by the Potable Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA) of Cozumel who discovered nearly 40 clandestine connections.

The findings were concentrated in recently developed areas including the colonies Félix González I and II and Maravilla where the installations were carried out without a contract or legal authorization.

Cozumel CAPA manager Manuel Gurigutia Barrientos, reported that the illegal connections were identified during recent home-by-home inspections. “We have located the connections and now the next step is to contact the owners of the property to invite them to regularize the service,” Gurigutia said.

According to Gurigutia, the inspections were part of a broader effort to correct the irregularities they detected. Despite the quality of the installations, Gurigutia stressed that they were not carried out by CAPA (Comisión de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado) personnel but by external technicians who operate illegally on the island.

According to the official, these individuals have been illegally connecting to the network, which is considered a serious crime of theft. If any anomalies or damages are found, CAPA will apply severe sanctions and demand the necessary repairs, he said.

Gurigutia said although the number of irregular tapping is relatively low compared to the more than 21,000 island customers, it is crucial to regularize these situations to guarantee an adequate service and avoid company losses.
