Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Riviera Maya is likely to experience an unusually chilly and extended winter season. This year, the region could see nighttime temperatures drop to as low as 10C (50F).
According to Alejandra Margarita Méndez Girón, the General Coordinator of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), during the 2024-2025 Cold Front Season, 48 frontal systems and seven winter storms are expected to occur in Mexico.
Of the remaining systems, eight are forecast for December, eight in January, seven in February, six in March, four in April and two in May. As for winter storms, he said one is expected in November, another in December, two in January and three in February.
Méndez Girón says the cold front season, which statistically begins in September and ends in May, is characterized by a marked drop in temperature, strong winds, rain and snow mainly in the north of the country.
Quintana Roo Civil Protection meteorologist Antonio Morales Ocaña says the effects of the winter season have already been felt in Quintana Roo with the arrival of cold fronts. Several large masses of cold and polar air have made their way south to the Yucatan Peninsula from the U.S.
He says the region could experience an unusual drop in nighttime and early morning temperatures with a minimum of 10C and constants between 15C and 17C, which would mark a drastic change given the overly hot summer.
Morales Ocaña says regions of Quintana Roo have recorded as low as 13C (55F) already this winter. A mass of polar air from the U.S. in late November left parts of Tulum with the state’s lowest nighttime temperatures.
Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil urges residents to take precautionary measures to avoid respiratory problems related to low temperatures, which is especially important for those used to the normally warm climate.
