Cancun officers accused of extortion escorted taxi passenger who refused to pay

Cancun, Q.R. — The mayor of Cancun says the two city officers accused of extorting a young man was misunderstood. Ana Paty Peralta says the officers took the young man to a bank machine to get cash after he refused to pay his taxi fare.

Police were called by the Cancun taxi driver after the youth refused to pay. In response, he was escorted to an ATM by the police officers to get money to pay the driver.

According to Peralta, the media outlet who released the video accusing the officers of extortion did so under a “misunderstanding”. However, Peralta says the internal investigation into the actions of the two officers to clarify what happened continues.

Two Cancun police officers were videoed escorting a young man to an ATM on José López Portillo Avenue Sunday night after arresting him. One of the officers waited at the door while the youth withdrew cash.

It is not known who recorded the video. The following day, a local media outlet accused the officers of extortion. Peralta says the investigation continues, including a review of security cameras.

“All investigations are being carried out. The cameras are being checked. But it doesn’t seem like it appears in the media’s video. It doesn’t mean that all investigations are not being carried out. I am the first to ask that if there was corruption, there should be sanctions,” she said.

Peralta also said that the young man involved has not filed any complaint against the officers.
