Citizen extortion: Cancun officer being investigated by Internal Affairs after video goes viral

Cancun, Q.R. — A city police officer is being investigated for extorting a citizen. The internal investigation was started Monday after a weekend video of the officer inside a bank’s ATM area went viral.

The Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit of Benito Juarez announced the start of the investigation against an officer allegedly involved in an act of extortion inside a bank on Avenida Jose Lopez Portillo.

The Internal Affairs Directorate opened file SMSPT/DAI/344/12/2024 into the incident. In a statement released Monday, Cancun Police confirmed the internal investigation and its zero tolerance policy regarding police conduct that violates the law.

“In light of the video circulating on social media, we have initiated the corresponding investigation through Internal Affairs of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic. We reiterate our commitment to transparency and legality,” Policía de Cancún posted in a statement.

The investigation was started after the viral video shows a Cancun city officer escorting a citizen to an ATM allegedly to extort him. Both are seen inside the ATM area of the bank while a second officer waits outside.

The Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit reported that the Internal Affairs Directorate immediately opened a file to conduct an “exhaustive investigation” to determine the facts and responsibilities.
