Cancun beachgoer struck by windblown umbrella suffers ‘significant abrasion’

Cancun, Q.R. — Civil Protection says a man struck by a windblown umbrella on a Cancun beach Friday suffered a significant abrasion. The man was at Playa Marlin in the Cancun Hotel Zone when a gust of wind dislodged a beach umbrella in a freak accident.

Witnesses reported seeing the umbrella being blown along the sand, at which point it struck the man in a leg. According to initial reports, the umbrella came loose after a sudden change in wind and traveled several meters along the beach before hitting him.

On-duty lifeguards attended to his injury before transferring him to hospital. According to Cancun Civil Protection, the umbrella caused a significant abrasion that created difficulty for the man to stand, so he was transferred to hospital.

In a briefing, Protección Civil Cancún reported “Emergency response at Playa Marlin. Our Civil Protection and Lifeguard personnel provided first aid to a man who was injured after being struck by a windblown umbrella.
