Tropical temperatures to return as cold front 16 moves away from Yucatan Peninsula

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Early morning temperatures around the northern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula have taken a noticeable dip. A mass of polar air from the north reached the region Thursday. Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) says the polar air mass, cold front 16, will linger for the day.

For today, cold front number 16  will extend over the Yucatan Peninsula and the southeast of the national territory, bringing rain to areas along the north including the states of Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

Showers with isolated heavy downpours of 25 to 50 mm are forecast for Friday. Likewise, the  polar air mass associated with the front will maintain the “Norte” event with wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec and with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h along the coasts of Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

Those winds will diminish during the afternoon. Meanwhile, a cooling of temperatures is expected in southeastern Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula.

The SMN says for the Yucatan Peninsula, partly to mostly cloudy skies with isolated heavy showers in Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo are expected for Friday. “Cool in the morning, mild to warm in the afternoon.

“A “Norte” wind event with speeds of 20 to 30 km/h and gusts of 40 to 60 km/h is expected along with waves of 1.5 to 2.5 meters in height along the coasts of Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo.”

By the end of the day, cold front number 16  will enter the Caribbean Sea and cease to affect the country. Normal tropical temperatures for this time of year are expected to return for the weekend.
