Boxes of narcotics destined for Cozumel intercepted in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A large shipment of narcotics bound for Cozumel were intercepted in Playa del Carmen. The shipment of approximately 150 kilos was seized by authorities over the weekend.

The State Attorney General (FGE) said three large boxes of around 50 kilos each was detected by a narcotics dog inside a courier service in Playa del Carmen. The boxes had a differing originating address but had the same destination.

Authorities say the three cardboard boxes originated from Lázaro Cárdenas, and Michoacán and were destined for Cozumel.

“As a result of investigative actions carried out by personnel assigned to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Drug Trafficking, in coordination with elements of the National Defense Secretariat, National Guard and Municipal Police, three boxes containing green and dried plant material with characteristics similar to marijuana were seized,” the FGE reported.

“The incident occurred while officers were conducting an investigation near a logistics center located in the Villas del Sol subdivision. There, they discovered three suspicious boxes that were unusually heavy and emitted a distinctive odor.

“During the corresponding inspection, three blue cardboard boxes, taped and wrapped, weighing approximately 50 kilograms each, were secured, addressed to a sender located in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán and destined for the municipality of Cozumel,” they added.

The three boxes were placed at the disposal of this Public Prosecutor’s Office in order to compile the respective investigation to identify those responsible for sending and receiving the packages.
